Low-emission zones in Italy
Milan has a large Area B and a separate central Area C. Area B primarily regulates emissions; Area C may also require payment and activation of an entry ticket.
Cities and zones covered by this guide
This guide covers Milan in detail, not every Italian city. A local ZTL is not necessarily an emissions zone.
Area B emissions restrictions
Eligibility depends on the vehicle and the current stage of restrictions. Fuel, Euro standard and category matter; cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles can have different rules.
Use the official checker with the correct registration number and country. A postponement affecting one category does not postpone restrictions for every vehicle.
Area C tickets
Area C combines emissions rules with charging for specified vehicles. Before travelling, establish whether the car is eligible and whether an entry ticket must be purchased and activated.
Paying does not authorise an emissions violation. Check the day, operating hours and the deadline for any permitted later payment.
Foreign plates, hotels and parking
Check that Milan’s systems recognise the correct technical details of the vehicle. Have the registration certificate available.
A hotel or garage booking does not automatically grant permission. The approach may also pass through another ZTL, pedestrian area or restricted street. Confirm the exact route.
