Low-emission zones in Spain
Spanish ZBE rules are set locally according to vehicle emissions. A vehicle registered abroad may need its details documented or registered before travel.
Cities and zones covered by this guide
This guide covers Barcelona and Madrid, not every Spanish ZBE. Each city sets its own conditions and registration procedure.
Barcelona and Madrid
Barcelona’s AMB system requires registration of foreign vehicles. Ordinary passenger-car access is generally assessed from Euro 3 petrol or Euro 4 diesel; documentation checks can take up to 15 working days.
Madrid distinguishes the general city ZBE from Distrito Centro and Plaza Elíptica. Central access conditions can be stricter than the general emissions requirement. AMB registration does not replace Madrid’s procedure.
Foreign vehicles and classification
Spain uses 0, ECO, C and B categories, plus vehicles not eligible for a sticker. DGT does not normally issue its sticker for foreign-registered cars; this does not exempt them from local rules.
The city may require registration or evidence of fuel, emissions standard and category. Have the registration certificate ready.
Local permission
Check the exact procedure and processing deadline. An application may not give immediate permission to enter; retain the required confirmation.
Registration in one Spanish metropolitan area is not a nationwide permit. A German or French sticker does not by itself satisfy every local registration obligation.
Route and parking
Check the exact destination. Stricter central areas can have separate rules for hotels, deliveries and garage access.
For a hire car, use the registration number of the vehicle actually supplied. Recheck any permit if the car or plate changes.
